The Book of Tawheed

Compiled By Shaikh Saleh Al-Fozan
Darussalam 1997, hardcover p.159

“The Book of Tawheed” is a comprehensive study of subject of monotheism in Islam. This book draws

on the works of great scholars of Islam: Shaikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (mostly), Ibn al-Qayyim, and Shaikhul Islam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab and his students, may Allah have mercy on them all. Shaikh Saleh al-Fozan states in his introduction that is necessary for us to learn the correct Aqeedah so that we do not fall into trends such as atheism and Sufism.

This book is presented in a way that makes it very easy to learn from. Each section brings explanations from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Ahadith and Qur’an are presented with the accented Arabic script followed by the English translation of the meaning. Where some further explanation is needed very brief footnotes are provided by the translator, Mahmoud Ridha Murad.

If you are weary of learning too many technical Arabic terms this book would really help you gain a grasp on concepts and meanings.  In section 1 -Perversion in human life and an historical outlook of Kufr (infidelity) atheism, polytheism, and hypocrisy- terms like Shirk, Infidelity, Nifaq (Hypocrisy), Jahiliyah (ignorance), etc, are extensively defined giving the linguistic meaning, application, and types which shows the difference between what brings someone out of Islam and what does not, something we all should really know!.  When a comparison of terms and types is presented a chapter summary makes it easy to sort out what has just been presented.

Section 2 - Statements or Actions that negate Tawheed or defect it - brings warning of practices such as wearing charms and amulets, materialism, sorcery, astrology, and mocking Islam, as well as many other prevalent practices. An example of the author’s writing style taken from this section:

Regarding Materialism, p 80: “Allah, the Exalted, has created in this world easily obtained pleasures, and the apparent beauties of wealth, children, power of authority, and the rest of joys that only Allah knows. Most people strive only to obtain such pleasures and enjoy them without contemplating their purpose, and preoccupy themselves by obtaining them while heedless of the world to come. Rather, they deny the existence of another life, as Allah, the Exalted, says: ‘And they say, ‘There is nothing except this present life of ours, and we shall not be resurrected.” (6:29)…”

Section 3 - What must be believed regarding the Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, his household and his Companions, presents guidance from the Qur’an and Sunnah on the necessity of loving the Prophet, having respect for his household and C-*ompanions without falling into excess.

Section 4 – Bid’ah (Innovations) - presents guidance from the Qur’an and Sunnah on avoiding the evils of Bid’ah including its definition, kinds and rulings, warnings of modern day innovations, and an explanation on why Bid’ah is prevalent.

Considering that Tawheed should always be our focus when learning Islam or calling others to it, “The Book of Tawheed” would be a great addition to any library, as it lays down an excellent foundation for understanding monotheism.  This book is filled with lots of knowledge to, inshaallah, help you safeguard your soul!
