Ama'z Padz
Name:
Umm Abbaas

Business Name: Ama'z Padz

Briefly Describe Your Business or Work:
Alhamdulillah I sell homemade cloth items for women and girls.
I make reusable cloth menstrual pads, pantyliners, nursing pads
and cloth wipes.

What is your role in the business?
I am the WAHM behind the business.
I make everything myself here in my NYC apartment.

Why did you choose this endeavor?
It started as a project - I wanted to make some cloth pads
to send to some of our sisters studying in Yemen (in a care-package sent from http://www.dtssbc.com).
One thing lead to another and here I am 4 or so years later still making pads - alhamdulillah!

What marketing strategies do you use?

I started selling on eBay and then moved to hyenacart.com which is a sort-of WAHM mall.

What was your biggest challenge getting started?
I really didn't have any challenges because I wasn't looking to go into business at the time - it just happened.
I started small - buying just a yard or two of fabric here and there and when business picked up I joined coops on yahoo groups to get good deals on bulk fabrics and such.

What accomplishment are you most happy with?

Alhamdulillah... I am so grateful to Allaah that I am able to be home with my son. I am able to work if I have time but concentrate on studies and my family as well.

Where would you like to see your company in five years?

Allaahu alim. InshaAllaah I hope to make hijra and if Allaah wills then I will try to continue in another country but if not qadrAllaah (it is what Allaah wills).

What advice would you give Muslim women looking to start a business?
Make dua. Allaah is the granter of success. Don't be afraid to try something new. Dust off that sewing machine and give it a whirl - you'll be surprised how easy it is to make your own pads, diapers, clothing, bags, curtains etc etc... especially being a Muslim... we can make our own jilbabs, khimars and niqabs and don't forget about thobes to fit our husband and sons.

What networking opportunities do you offer Muslim businesses?

I have a "links" page on my website.
